The item you describe sounds like one of the Royal Doulton character jugs. Doulton identifiy their wares by using a reference number beginning with a D. They made 3 versions D6335 (Large), D6386 (Small) both first issued around 1951 and a miniature version D6512 first produced around 1960. I believe all three versions continue to be in production.
