I have two tiny clay(?) figures of Chinese (or perhaps Japanese) peasants. I would like to know where they come from and whether they are of any value. I acquired them in England from the home of a deceased relative. They are somewhat primitive/simplistic in their facial designs but they are well posed. They have been glazed and appear to have once had felt on the bottoms. (or may have been glued in a larger scene?)One is 1.25 inches tall and in a standing position. He is painted to have black, knee-length, wide-legged short pants and a green shirt. He is wearing a round, wide, flat hat and he is carrying two bundles of straw or sticks strapped to a shoulder yoke.
The other is about 1 inch tall and is in a semi-sitting position - one knee on the ground with that leg tucked under the other leg which has only his foot on the ground. The raised leg is supporting his right hand. His left hand is in his lap. I appears that he once was holding something as his hands have space between the closed fingers and his palms. He has no hat. His head is shaved except for the back third of his hair which is pulled hard back into what may be a comb.
Can anyone help me to indentify these figurines?
