These curious devices are indeed known as Campaign Beds. During the 19th century the British Army fought campaigns all over the world. Everything they needed and used had to be transported by horse or carts and a whole range of folding chairs, tables, wardrobes, desks etc. etc. were developed to make life as comfortable as possible while being easily transportable.

The bed you describe is usually made of oak and came into use around the time of the 1st world war it is unlikely that the one you have ever saw service. After WWI the company responsible marketed the item for domestic use and unless yours carries a war dept. stamp it is probably the later model.
