Need information on old Japanese tea set

I have an old tea set purchased in the UK over 40 years ago. It is a service for 6 (cups and saucers) and the set includes a tea holder, tea pot, covered cream and sugar. The background color is either black or brown. There are 4 Japanese men on it with what looks like a halo in gold around each ones head. There is a woman with a blue head dress, also with a gold halo but hers comes down around her arms and body. She appears to be sitting down. The cups are gold plated inside and all of the handles on every piece is gold plate. There is a gold cross in a gold circle with white background on most of the pieces. I would love to know what these pictures mean. I'm thinking this set has something to do with a religious ceremony or a particular sect.
