Hello! My mother in law is trying to identify an antique which originally belonged to her great-grandfather.
It is a small silver rectangular object, hallmarked, measuring about 4"x2" and about 1/8" thick. The lid hinges open at one end and inside are four thin compartments. One is the whole length and half the width; the other half the width is split into three compartments.
Externally one end has a serrated 'holder' type thing - it looks like it could have held a small pen or a match perhaps. At the other end is a loop for attaching a chain or string? The whole object is slightly curved, akin to a hip flask sort of shaoe.
I would appreciate any clues as to its purpose!!!
