Here are a few pointers...

Old enamel ware was made to be used, it is generally of sturdier construction using thicker steel than the modern versions which are generally made for decorative purposes only.

The enamelling is generally thicker also which inevitably leads to some chipping damage being present on older pieces.

Size also gives us a clue, modern version are generally smaller - more on a scale with our modern lives, whereas older items tend to be almost 'industrial' size by comparison. Collanders, Jugs etc. made to do a job not just look like they might.

Some older pieces bear factory marks to the base and I'm sure your public library would have a book on the subject. To my knowledge no modern copies reproduce those marks.
